11th December: First frost of the winter

We've had a few light frosts but today was our first really heavy frost with temperatures well below zero C.

The stems of Morina longifolia (right) become encrusted with frost.  After a prolonged freeze the leaves will become slushy and its best to clear them away before they rot.

18th December: Rudbeckia seed heads

Rudbeckia fulgida Deamii has flowered right through November and into early December this year and now I am enjoying the seed heads. The brown cones is still prominent and after the petals fade the sepals (the harder green petal-like parts under the flower) take their place to give structure.

Rudbeckias will self seed particularly into a gravel path.
